In 2022, the direction of travel: Lincoln businesses celebrate regional and national recognition.

Journal Star Journal Star invited readers to present honors that companies or employees were awarded as the best of the region, state, or nation. In addition, there is a summary of the most prestigious awards given by local business groups.

Kristina Hill, co-owner and operator at HomeShield Roofing and Exteriors, was awarded the National Women in Roofing Rising Star Award. Hill was one of 13 finalists who launched Harness & Heels, a Harness & Heels social media community to encourage women in a male-dominated field.

Huffman Engineering was named 2022 control systems integrator of the year for small businesses from Control Engineering and Plant Engineering magazine. System integrators are firms of engineering that design and implement computer-controlled control systems for manufacturing lines, industrial machinery, and other automation lines.

Mike Semrad and his marketing company, Red Rebel Media, were honored within 2021 with the Prism Award to establish “Music in Motion” in a partnership that they formed with Lied Center for Performing Arts and PedalPushers that brought music to the streets via the pedicab’s back.

Bryan Health, which has been a guide for the city in the current pandemic, was awarded the Chamber’s highest business honor: the Cornerstone Award.

Individual awards were given for Tom Smith, the Burnham Yates Citizenship Award winner, and Marilyn Moore, the Roger T. Larson Community Builder Award winner.


Other businesses that won Celebrate Business Awards included: Muchachos (small business), Instinct (manufacturer), Nelnet Renewable Energy Services (green company), CompanyCam (entrepreneurial spirit), and Lincoln Airport (tourism development).

Author and artist Linda Stephen of Unfolding Communications was awarded a 2021 Nebraska Book Award for illustration for her picture book “The Day We went to the Park.” The Sgraphics were made by layers of handmade paper and more than 1000 origami artifacts.

Speedway Properties and Nelnet, partners in the construction of the Telegraph District, were honored for their contribution to the development of this year’s project at the Commercial Real Estate Summit.

The ESOP Association honored Commonwealth Electric Company of the Midwest for printed materials and online and in-person events as part of their annually held Awards for Communications Excellence. The awards were given out at the Employee Owned 2021 conference in Las Vegas.

D.A. Davidson Companies named Lisa Smith, employed at D.A. Davidson’s Lincoln office, as the 2021 winner of the Bragg Lewis Knutson Community Service Award in recognition of extraordinary volunteer efforts.

Irv Blumkin, the Omaha-based Nebraska Furniture Mart CEO, was among the five inductees to the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame.

The General Company’s Colin Chen on creativity, sustainability, and serial entrepreneurialism.
